Women's Health an Ayurvedic Approach

In ancient Indian literature, women are given a special position; place, and importance both in the social aspect and as far as the aspect of health are concerned. The women in the ancient times were worshipped like the gods and it was believed that wherever women are respected; all the wealth and riches dwell there. They possessed a vital and important place in the various aspects of a man's life.

Since a woman is given the additional responsibility of the proper bringing up of the next generation through conception and birth of a child, she has been provided with a full fledged system, which includes ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and the breasts (mammary glands).

In Ayurveda, age of a woman is divided into various stages according to the condition of her reproductive system. She is known as
• Balika (small girl) from birth till pre pubertal age
• Kumari (virgin) from menarche till her marriage
• Gruhini (housewife) after marriage;
• Praudha (middle aged woman) after 50 years of age
• Rajaswala, during her menstrual periods
• Garbhini during pregnancy and
• Prasuta immediately after delivery.

It is mandatory for a woman to follow a nutritious diet and proper deeds to keep in balance with the monthly wear and tear, which goes on in her reproductive system. For this purpose, Ayurveda has advised specific rules of diet and deeds to be followed during the period of menstrual flow, conception, pregnancy, delivery and lactation.

The science of Ayurveda describes in detail, the uterine tonics to be taken during pregnancy, to ensure a normal delivery of a healthy child. Also, the monthly decoctions to prevent abortions and stillbirth are advised which are of immense practical value even today.

Ayurveda also gives a detailed account of various diseases during pregnancy and post partum period, gynecological disorders like excessive bleeding, scanty bleeding, leucorrhoea, vaginal infections, and some surgical anomalies such as cervical polyps etc and many others along with their detailed medical as well as surgical treatment.
